Fast Start Training
Fast Start is designed to provide an immediate comfort level for new leaders and enables them to say “I can do this!”. Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member.

Boy Scout and Venture Leader
Basic Leader Training

New Leader Essentials
This 11⁄2 hr. training course is the first steps in “basic leader training” and is required for all new leaders.  New Leaders Essentials will be offered prior to each council’s Cub, Scout and Venturing Leader Specific Training.  It highlights the values, aims, history, funding and the methods of Scouting.

Boy Scout Leader Specific Training
For Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into four parts.  The first three concentrates on troop operation and can be completed in one full day.  The fourth part, which focuses on outdoor skills, lasts approximately a day and a half.  The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and the Introduction of Outdoor Leader Skills.

Troop Committee Members, Leader Specific Training
 
(Troop Committee Challenge): By following the Troop Committee Training Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge in three hours, after which they are considered trained.

Outdoor Leader Skills
The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters and Varsity Scout coaches.  The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in the Boy Scout Handbook.  The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.

Venturing Leader Specifics
Developed for Venturing Advisors, assistant Advisors and new committee members, this training incorporates Venturing current adult leader training.  New Leader Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific can be completed in one day, after which the leader is considered to be trained.

Youth Protection & Health & Saftey Training
Youth Protection is an important component of the Boy Scout’s strategy to protect its members from child abuse and is required for all leaders attending Cub Day Camps, Boy Scout Summer Camps and High Adventure Camps and strongly encouraged for all other leaders. Approximately 1½ hrs. in duration.

Health& Safety
Health & Safety is a course designed to ensure that all adult leaders are aware of BSA’s policies on water, automobile, hiking, B.B. gun and camping safety and acceptable and unacceptable outdoor activities. It is required that everyone who is listed as the tour leader on the tour permit and strongly encouraged for all other leaders. 1½ hrs. in duration.

Den Chief Training
An approximate 7-hour course designed to enhance the confidence and leadership skills of all Den Chiefs throughout the council.

TRAINER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE (Formerly Train the Trainer)
WHO: All Council, District, and Unit Trainers

Why: This course is required for all trainers at the unit, district, and council level. Emphasis is on how to be a more effective trainer by learning better presentation techniques and by creating better visual aids to assist you in delivering your training message. This course is only offered twice per year, in January and in August and is for all Cub, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders involved in training. All Scouters serving on a Wood Badge staff must attend if they have not been to it within the past 3 years.

Powder Horn 2004
Plan to attend – NOW. This exciting and challenging new course will fill to its capacity of 48 participants. It is designed for all Venturing Advisors and Boy Scout High Adventure enthusiasts. This course is based upon the Ranger Award requirements giving participants an exposure to outdoor/high adventure activities.

Wood Badge
Wood Badge is the advanced training program for all Scout leaders. The course concentrates on leadership skills and group dynamics to improved the quality of Scouting offered at every level. Wood Badge training has two parts. The first is practical experience where the Scouter lives as a member of a patrol and practices the skills of leadership. This practical training is conducted over two, three-day weekends.

The second part of Wood Badge is the application of what has been learned. Each participant writes a “ticket”, a contract with himself/herself as to how the new skills will be put to work.

The only prerequisite, other than the desire to make your unit a better environment for the Scout program, is that you complete the “New Leader Essentials” and Leader Specific training for your Scouting position prior to the beginning of the upcoming Wood Badge course. Drop by the Scout Center to sign up ($50.00 deposit) or contact your District’s Training Chairperson; Dennis Hayes (545-5622) or Jim Matthews at the Scout Service Center (341-8611 ext. 21).

The course fee is $160.00. A $50.00 deposit is required with application. Monthly payments may be made. Final payment must be received thirty (30) days before the course begins. Wood Badge scholarships are available from both the local council and several national organizations. Applications are available at the Alamo Area Council office for VFW and AFL-CIO scholarships. The deadline for filing both scholarships is available by calling one of the numbers above. The local scholarship applications should be in letter form and addressed to the Alamo Area Council Wood Badge Scholarship Committee stating the need.

Cedar Badge is a week long Junior Leader Training Experience provided by volunteer Scouts and Scouts of the Alamo Area Council to prepare junior leaders with effective patrol and troop leadership.

Cedar Badge Goals:
* To give Scouts an understanding of the 11 skills of leadership and how to apply them in his troop and patrol.
* To prepare Scouts with a learning experience in a variety of Scoutcraft skills which will enable him to assist his patrol and troop members as they participate in the Boy Scouts of America advancement program.
* To provide junior leaders with the knowledge to assist in creating a quality program for their own troop.
* To give Scouts an opportunity to share experiences with other junior leaders in the Alamo Area Council.
