Wood Badge
Wood Badge is the advanced training program
for all Scout leaders. The course concentrates on
leadership skills and group dynamics to improved the
quality of Scouting offered at every level. Wood Badge
training has two parts. The first is practical experience
where the Scouter lives as a member of a patrol and
practices the skills of leadership. This practical
training is conducted over two, three-day weekends.
The second part of Wood Badge is the application
of what has been learned. Each participant writes
a “ticket”, a contract with himself/herself
as to how the new skills will be put to work.
The only prerequisite, other than the desire to make
your unit a better environment for the Scout program,
is that you complete the “New Leader Essentials”
and Leader Specific training for your Scouting position
prior to the beginning of the upcoming Wood Badge
course. Drop by the Scout Center to sign up ($50.00
deposit) or contact your District’s Training
Chairperson; Dennis Hayes (545-5622) or Jim Matthews
at the Scout Service Center (341-8611 ext. 21).
The course fee is $160.00. A $50.00 deposit is required
with application. Monthly payments may be made. Final
payment must be received thirty (30) days before the
course begins. Wood Badge scholarships are available
from both the local council and several national organizations.
Applications are available at the Alamo Area Council
office for VFW and AFL-CIO scholarships. The deadline
for filing both scholarships is available by calling
one of the numbers above. The local scholarship applications
should be in letter form and addressed to the Alamo
Area Council Wood Badge Scholarship Committee stating
the need.
