Commissioners
What is a Commissioner Service
all about?
Commissioner service is one of four important functions
of the Alamo Area Council, the others being membership,
finance, and program.
The primary objective of those in Commissioner Service
is to make the goals of Scouting happen in the lives
of Scouting’s youth members. These goals are
character building, citizenship training, and skills
development.
There are several levels of Commissioner
Service. The Council Commissioner and his
staff are primarily responsible for training of District
and Unit Commissioners, training of Roundtable staffs
and providing them with opportunities for exchanging
ideas. They also keep the District Commissioner and
his/her staffs informed concerning National and Council
policies and programs.
The District Commissioner and his
staff of Assistant District Commissioners are primarily
responsible for recruiting Unit Commissioners on the
ratio three units per commissioner and to see that
the units in the district adhere to the program and
policies of the Boy Scouts of America. The District
Commissioner is responsible for the District Roundtable
staff and its program implementation.
The Unit Commissioner is a friend,
a representative of Scouting, a Unit “Doctor”
a teacher and the counselor for a unit. He/she aids
the unit in following the Unit Service Plan (see below).
This plan is designed to help the unit to keep track
of its membership, to recharter on time, and to achieve
quality unit status. In following the Unit Service
Plan the objectives of the Scouting program will be
achieved.
If you’re interested in volunteering
for commissioner service contact your District Executive
or a Commissioner. He/she will lead you in enrolling
as a Commissioner.
Commissioners’ recognition:
A commissioner after finishing basic training is eligible
as a result of service to be awarded the Arrowhead
Award, the Commissioner Key, and the Distinguished
Commissioner Award. The Roundtable chairperson is
eligible for the Commissioner Key and the Distinguished
Commissioner Award. Roundtable staff is eligible for
the Commissioner Training Award and the Distinguished
Commissioner Award.
