New Leader Training Starts Here - District Training Schedule

FAST START:  Fast Start is designed to provide an immediate comfort level for new leaders and enables them to say “I can do this!”.  Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member.  Fast Start is available on line by clicking the links below.  It is also available from your Pack, Troop or Crew.

THIS IS SCOUTING:  This online training course replaces New Leader Essentials as the first step in “basic leader training” and is required for all new leaders.  It highlights the values, aims, history, funding and the methods of the Boy Scouts of America.

CUB SCOUT LEADERSHIP SPECIFIC TRAINING:   Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, pack committee members and Pack Trainers complete this training which includes Introduction to Cub Scouting, How We Have Fun and Position Specific training in approximately 3  hours.  The leader is considered fully trained upon completion of Fast Start, Youth Protection and the Leader Specific training.

BOY SCOUT LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING:  For Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into three parts that concentrate on troop operation and can be completed in one full day.  The leader is considered fully trained upon completion of Youth Protection, This is Scouting, Boy Scout Leader Specific Training, and the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

TROOP COMMITTEE CHALLENGE TRAINING:  The Troop Committee Challenge course is now offered online.   Participants will be considered trained for the troop committee when they complete the challenge.

VENTURING LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING: Developed for Venturing Advisors, assistant Advisors and new committee members, this training incorporates Venturing adult leader training.  The leader is considered to be trained upon completion of Youth Protection, This is Scouting, Venturing Leader Specific Training and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

VARSITY LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING: This training is for those who work in the Varsity program.  For training availability, please contact the council office.  Varsity leaders must complete Youth Protection, This is Scouting, Varsity Leader Specific Training and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, after which the leader is considered to be trained.

Health & Safety is a course designed to ensure that all adult leaders  are aware of BSA’s policies on water, automobile, hiking, B.B. gun and camping safety and acceptable and unacceptable outdoor activities.  It is required that everyone who is listed as the tour leader on the tour permit and strongly encouraged for all other leaders.  1½ hrs. in duration.

YOUTH PROTECTION:  Youth Protection is an important component of the Boy Scout’s strategy to protect its members from child abuse and is required for all leaders and for all adults attending Cub Day Camps, Boy Scout Summer Camps and High Adventure Camps.  Available Online!  Approximately ½ hour in duration. 

CHARTERED ORGANIZATION REPRESENTATIVE:  This training provides the Chartered Organization Representative with an overview of the scouting program and the role that the COR plays in the operation of the unit, district and council.  This training is approximately 1½ hrs. in duration.

INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS:   The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Scout leaders and Venturing leaders.  The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in the Boy Scout Handbook.  The course focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.

OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS FOR WEBELOS LEADERS:   The Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders is the outdoor training program to prepare Webelos leaders to take the boys into an outdoor setting.  Essential skills for camping and outdoor activity badge preparation are taught.  This course is taught in conjunction with the Boy Scout Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

BASIC ADULT LEADER OUTDOOR ORIENTATION (BALOO):   BALOO is required for Cub Scout Pack leadership who will be conducting a pack overnighter at McGimsey Scout Park.  One member from each pack must be trained.  We encourage others to attend.  Health, safety, basic camping, program planning and other important topics are presented. This is a one day course.

WOOD BADGE: Wood Badge is the advanced training program for all Scout leaders.  The course concentrates on leadership skills and group dynamics to improved the quality of Scouting offered at every level.  Wood Badge training has two parts.  The first is practical experience where the Scouter lives as a member of a patrol and practices the skills of leadership.  This practical training is conducted over two, three day weekends.  The second part of Wood Badge is the application of what has been learned.  Each participant writes a “ticket”, a contract with himself/herself as to how the new skills will be put to work. The only prerequisite, other than the desire to make your unit a better environment for the Scout program, is that you complete the “New Leader Essentials” and Leader Specific training for your Scouting position prior to the beginning of the upcoming Wood Badge course.

POWDER HORN:   Plan now to attend the Fall 2012 Powder Horn Course to be conducted at Bear Creek Scout Reservation over two three-day weekends (that is all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday).  This exciting and challenging new course will soon fill to its capacity of 48 participants. It is designed for all Venturing Advisors and Boy Scout High Adventure enthusiasts.  Powder Horn is a training opportunity designed to expose the Venturing or Boy Scout leader to activities and resources necessary to operate a successful high adventure program in several ways:
* Help Venturing and Boy Scout leaders to safely conduct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature.
* Provide an introduction to the resources available to successfully lead Venturers & older Boy Scouts through a program of high adventure.
* Familiarize the Advisor with the Ranger program so that he or she can help the Venturer meet the requirements of the Ranger Award .

Philmont Training Center:   Nestled in the mountains of northeastern New Mexico is "Scouting Paradise".  The Philmont Scout Ranch, popular for high adventure activites, is also home to the Philmont Training Center, scouting's premier training opportunity for all adults in the program.  Programs are available during the week for scouters and their families.  It's like an all inclusive "cruise" with scouting focus.  Click the link below to visit the Philmont site.  If you are interested in attending one of the sessions, contact your District Executive for an invitation.

NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING:  This is a week long Youth Leadership Training Experience provided by volunteer Scouts and Scouts of the Alamo Area Council to prepare Boy Scouts and Venturers for effective leadership.

Goals:
* To give Scouts and Venturers an understanding of the skills of leadership and how to apply them in Scouting. To provide youth leaders with the knowledge to assist in creating a quality program for their own unit. * To give each an opportunity to share experiences with other youth leaders in the Alamo Area Council.
