Adult Leader Training Amnesty Period

Over the past few years, the training status of unit leaders has been recorded in the national registration system.  System problems have lead to that information becoming unavailable or unreliable.  In order to correct the situation, BSA national has repaired the system but we need to re-create the training records for the council.  The executive committee of the Board of Directors of the Alamo Area Council recently approved a process to update our records.

The process begins now and will run through the end of April 2008.  We are asking the top leaders of each unit to assist us by capturing and then certifying the training status for each leader in the unit.  A training status update form for each type of unit is available.  Instructions for completing the form are included with it.  The procedure for using the form is as follows:

Each leader in the unit should provide proof of completing the required training for their current position.  While other training may have been completed, at this time we need to update the training status for the current position only.  If the leader cannot provide proof of completing a course by presenting a training card or certificate, the unit may accept a verbal claim of course completion “on their honor.”  We are including a list of required training courses for each leader position to help you determine what is necessary.

When the form is completed, the committee chair and the primary top leader, such as Cubmaster or Scoutmaster, will sign the form and send it to the scout office.

We thank you for helping us to correct this problem.  As you know, “Every scout deserves a trained leader!”  Retention of youth in the scouting program is often directly related to the training received by their leaders.  During this update process you will probably find leaders who need training.  Encourage them to attend the next training held by your district or by the council for their position.  The schedule is available on the council web site.
